Fly Problem That Won't Go Away? We Find the Source.
Persistent fly problems are always a breeding source problem. Spraying adult flies is temporary — eliminating the organic material they breed in is permanent. We identify and treat the source.

Signs You Have a Problem
- Large numbers of house flies (Musca domestica) clustering on windows, near garbage areas, or in food preparation spaces — high fly counts inside always indicate a breeding source within or immediately adjacent to the structure
- Small drain flies (Psychodidae) — tiny, fuzzy-winged moths hovering near drains, under sinks, and near floor drains — indicating a buildup of organic sludge inside drain pipes where larvae develop
- Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) infestations around overripe fruit, recycling bins, bar areas, and floor drains — fruit flies breed in small amounts of fermenting organic matter and can establish in overlooked drains within days
- Blow flies (Calliphoridae) — large, metallic blue or green flies — inside the structure indicating a dead animal somewhere in the building, often in a wall void, attic, or crawl space
- Fungus gnats hovering around houseplants — larvae develop in moist potting soil and overwatered plant containers, and populations can expand from plants throughout the structure
- Cluster flies in attic spaces and upper rooms in fall — cluster flies (Pollenia rudis) enter structures to overwinter in large numbers and are a seasonal problem in some LA properties
Our Treatment Process
- 1
Fly Species Identification and Source Investigation
Fly control begins with species identification because each fly species has a completely different breeding substrate. House flies and blow flies breed in decaying organic matter and animal waste. Drain flies and fruit flies breed in organic buildup in drain lines and fermenting organic material. Fungus gnats breed in potting soil. Cluster flies are ectoparasites of earthworms that enter buildings to overwinter. We identify the species before looking for sources, then trace back to the breeding environment.
- 2
Breeding Source Elimination
We locate and eliminate or treat the breeding source — cleaning or treating drain lines for drain fly and fruit fly infestations, identifying and removing deceased animals for blow fly infestations, addressing organic waste accumulation for house fly infestations. Source elimination is the only permanent fly control measure. Chemical treatment of adult flies without source elimination produces only temporary population reduction.
- 3
Drain Treatment
For drain fly and fruit fly problems, we apply enzymatic drain cleaners or microbial products that break down the organic biofilm lining drain interiors. This treatment directly destroys the larval habitat. We treat floor drains, sink drains, and any other drain openings where fly activity is concentrated. In commercial kitchens and bar areas — common fly problem sites across LA's restaurant-dense neighborhoods — comprehensive drain treatment is the primary control tool.
- 4
Residual and Knockdown Treatment
We apply residual insecticides to resting areas and surfaces where adult flies concentrate — near doorways, around windows, on exterior walls near entry points — to reduce adult fly populations while breeding source elimination takes effect. In commercial settings, we use space treatments or fly light traps as supplemental population management tools.
How to Prepare for Treatment
- Identify and remove overripe fruit, vegetable waste, and any fermenting organic material before our visit — these are common fruit fly breeding sources that should be eliminated regardless of treatment
- Empty and clean all garbage cans and recycling bins — uncovered or rarely-cleaned waste receptacles are the most common house fly and fruit fly breeding source in LA homes
- Pull back rugs and mats from floor drains and clean visible organic buildup around drain openings — this helps the drain treatment reach the full biofilm layer
- If a dead animal odor is present anywhere in the structure, inform us before our visit — blow fly investigations require access to attic spaces, crawl spaces, and wall voids that should be identified and unlocked in advance
- Commercial clients should clear under bar equipment, kitchen prep stations, and floor drain mats for full access during the service visit
After Treatment: What to Expect
- Run enzymatic drain cleaner in all drains monthly to prevent organic biofilm accumulation that sustains drain fly and fruit fly populations
- Keep all food waste in tightly sealed containers and clean recycling bins weekly — available organic material sustains fly populations even after successful treatment
- Repair any torn window screens or gaps around door frames — physical exclusion reduces fly entry from the exterior, particularly for house fly problems driven by nearby organic material sources
- Address any moisture accumulation under appliances, in cabinet bases, or near plumbing — moist organic matter is a fly breeding substrate and moisture control is part of long-term fly prevention
- If blow fly activity returns after treatment, a new deceased animal may be present — contact us for reinspection rather than waiting for the situation to resolve on its own
Fly Control — Frequently Asked Questions
Fruit flies most commonly breed in drain line biofilm — the organic sludge that accumulates on the inside of drain pipes, particularly in kitchen sinks, bar sinks, and floor drains. This breeding site is not visible to residents and is not addressed by surface cleaning. Flies emerging from drains appear to come from nowhere. Enzymatic drain treatment is the solution. Other overlooked sources include the drip tray under the refrigerator, overripe produce, and the residue inside recycling bins.
Large metallic flies — blue bottles (Calliphora species) or green bottles (Lucilia species) — emerging inside your home almost certainly indicate a dead animal somewhere in the structure: a rodent that died in a wall void, attic, or crawl space after bait treatment, or a bird that entered a vent and became trapped. The flies breed in the carcass and emerge as adults. We investigate for the deceased animal source, remove it if accessible, and treat the area. If the carcass is inside a sealed wall void, we treat the void and ventilate as best as possible.
UV fly light traps are effective management tools in commercial settings — restaurants, food processing areas, and commercial kitchens where fly entry from the exterior is ongoing. They continuously capture adult flies but do not address breeding sources. In residential settings, they can supplement source elimination as a monitoring and capture tool. We can install and service commercial fly light trap systems as part of an ongoing fly management program.
The most effective fly prevention steps for Los Angeles properties are: secure all food waste in sealed containers (particularly outdoor compost and trash bins), keep pet waste areas clean, remove fallen fruit from yard trees promptly (a major fly attractant in LA's fruit-tree-dense neighborhoods), maintain clean drain lines, and ensure window and door screens are intact and properly fitted. In LA's warm climate, organic waste decomposes rapidly and quickly becomes a fly breeding site if not managed.
